Last weekend Schoolhouse Electric and Work/Shop PDX collaborated on a holiday party celebrating local vendors and artists as a way to get Portland into the holiday spirit. In addition to a s'mores bar, wine, appetizers and samples Work/Shop hosted a class to make wreaths and hanging wall decor to take home!

This was my first time visiting Schoolhouse Electric, but I have been hearing great things about the shop for awhile. I liked the vibe so much that I even went back for coffee later that week! Everything in the store has a slight vintage feel while still seeming fresh and modern. The tall ceilings and warehouse feel made the space quite open and special.

When it was our time to make our wreath (we put our names in and browsed the shop while we waited for the tables to clear) all of the wreath forms were already gone! The original options were to decorate either a wreath or a "foraged twig wreath", essentially a hanging piece of decorative greenery! I was not upset about making the hanging piece because it is so unique, and was quite easy to make. Lauren and I both agreed that it was one of our easiest DIY projects to date!

Supplies Needed:

Long, straight twig (to serve as the base of the project)
Twine
Thin wire to attach plants (a dark green color works best)
Hot glue (optional)
Lots of greenery, such as evergreen, eucalyptus, rosemary, etc.
Additional decor items such as cotton, pinecones, ribbon, etc.

Instructions:

Start with the long twig, which you can make longer by tying two together
Attach the twine to both ends of the twig, using double knots, to form the hanger for your wall art. It is better to make this too long than too short!
Begin attaching the greenery to the twig using the wire. This is your chance to be creative! Go lush and wild, simple and timeless, asymmetrical, whatever you want.
Attach any extras, such as the pinecones or cotton, using hot glue.
Hang your wreath and enjoy!
