Although Portland, and the Pacific Northwest in general, are often thought of as being wet and cold, there really is almost no where more beautiful than Portland in the summer. All of the rain throughout the year means our summers are lush and green, and the hot sun and extra-long days encourage locals to spend as much time as possible outdoors.

One of my favorite places to go on a warm June day is the Portland International Rose Test Garden. There are over 10,000 plants displayed within the park, which is full of wide open spaces, including a small amphitheater and stage that puts on a variety of shows in the summer. One of my favorite features is the tennis courts offering gorgeous views of Portland and the smell of roses, but others might love the nearby playground or the close proximity to both the zoo and the Japanese Gardens.

At the park there are also smaller enclosed areas and secluded grassy nooks that are perfect for reading in the sun or a late night picnic. Last Friday evening David (the boyfriend) and I walked to the Rose Gardens from my house and had a great grilled corn and avocado salad while we relaxed in the sun. The Rose Garden is not to be missed when visiting Portland, and locals should make sure to venture up at least once this summer.
