I tour a lot of homes for my job, and one feature that always attracts my attention is built-in shelving. It always seems to make the space feel more finished and pulled together when compared to more traditional free-standing storage or furniture options.

A popular spot for built-ins seems to be on either side of a fireplace, which obviously looks wonderful and allows for great storage as well. I do love seeing built-ins utilized in other places as well, such as bathrooms, offices, or even bedrooms. One of my personal favorites is built-in bookcases with a big window seat!

Built-ins make a home look more expensive, but there are countless DIY options out there, with many focusing trimming out bookshelves or other furniture (Ikea hacks galore!). Or, with only a basic knowledge of woodworking you can make great built-ins from scratch! Even when left to the professionals, built-in shelving can be a relatively inexpensive way to maximize space and bring the room together!
