Friday Five: Winter Bucket List

It is clear that winter has hit Portland in full force! Two snow storms (before January!!), the holidays are almost over, and cold days are the norm. Portland is jam packed with fun things to do during the summer, but there are activities that are only possible, or most fun, in winter. Below are 5 can't miss activities to do this winter!

Mt. Hood

The famous saying about Portland is that it is only an hour from the mountain and an hour from the coast. The mountain that everyone is referring to is Mt. Hood, which really is only an hour away from Portland. Although Mt. Hood has great summer activities, it really shines during the winter in the snow. For the active folks they have skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing and sledding. Timberline Lodge is a great place to cozy up with a hot drink and take in the beautiful sites. Or, rent a cabin with friends and family and enjoy a weekend getaway in the beautiful snow. You can't lose!

Walking Winter Brew Tour

Portland is known for their breweries, which put out great beer all year long. Most offer seasonal specials on winter beers and have special selections you can only get at the brewery. Gather a group of friends, bundle up, and plan a route to hit four or five great spots. I suggest ending the tour with a Spanish Coffee from Huber's Downtown to warm up. If you are lucky to can catch the magician!

Go to a Winterhawks and/or Blazers game

Hockey is the ultimate winter sport, and luckily Portland has its very own professional hockey team!! Winterhawks games are always a great time, and even with all of the ice it is still a great way to stay out of the cold. Taking in a Blazers game is another great way to celebrate winter and cheer for our amazing city!

Take in a Show

Let's face it: sometimes when it is cold, the last thing you want to do is spend time outside. Add to that the rain and we can become an indoor only city! My suggestion- take in a show!!! Check out one of the bigger venues, like the Moda Center, Keller Auditorium or the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall for a big name performance or show. See a comedy show at Helium, Harvey's, ComedySportz or Curious Comedy. Check out a movie at one of the unique theaters in Portland like a McMenamins Venue, Living Room Theater or Cinetopia. Or check out some smaller venues like the Northwest Childrens Theater or Doug Fir Lounge. The possibilities are endless!
